While rugged mountains and deep valleys seal off the
northern borders, in the south the land breaks into
1,425 islands, each more spectacular than the next.
These islands make up about 1/4 of the total land area.
Of these islands only 169 are inhabited. Greece has
78 islands connected by regular Ferry, Hydrofoil or
the New Super Fast Ferry boat service, with another
40-odd islets visited by tour or beach boats. The remaining
48 inhabited islands being occupied by monks, goatherds,
or the occasional Greek Shipping billionaire.
The
mix of history and geography is different on every island,
as if hand crafted by the Ancient of Gods of Olympus
themselves. The problem with the Greek islands is deciding
where to go and how long to stay. Although very tempting
to go during the peak season of July and August, it
is best to travel in the period before or after to avoid
the crowds, the tremendous heat and inflated prices.
However, if your soul thirsts to discover the passion
of the Greek, then maybe it is best to join the party
in the heart of the summer!
