- What To Do?
Montreal's night life has always had a good
reputation. Maybe it's the fact that the last call is
at 3:00am(compare to 1:00am in Toronto) or that the
legal drinking age is 18(compared to 21 in most U.S.
States), or that Montrealers love to go out all the
time! Of course the fact that Quebec was the only place
in Canada or U.S. where it was legal to manufacture
& sell alcohol during prohibition, also added to
Montreal's image as a "PARTY TOWN." There is
a huge variety of BARS, DANCE CLUBS, CAFE'S, ADULT
CLUBS & HANG OUTS for everyone's taste.
Year-round Montreal has all kinds of sights,
distractions and permanent attractions to take in. The
awesome OLYMPIC STADIUM, topped by the MONTREAL TOWER,
the world's tallest inclined tower. The splendid
BOTANICAL GARDEN, with over 30 outdoor gardens, as
well as the adjacent INSECTARIUM, with exhibits from
over 100 countries. The four natural ecosystems that
have been recreated in the BIODOME. The marvels of the
universe projected on the huge hemispheric dome of the
PLANETARIUM. OLD MONTREAL, for a tour of the city's
historic buildings and artisan shops along the quaint
cobblestone streets. The amazing 3D IMAX THEATRE all
year long. The spectacular CASINO de MONTREAL,
equipped with 2,785 slot machines, 113 gaming tables,
and five restaurants on site. And of course no trip is
complete without a tour of the many churches Montreal
is so famous for-including NOTRE-DAME BASILICA and ST
JOSEPHS ORATORY.
On top of all this their are FESTIVALS, CUISINE,
MUSEUMS, PROFESSIONAL SPORTS, and the BEST Mountain in
the Northeast-MT. TREMBLANT for any outdoor activity
you can imagine...ON SALE!
- Drinking Age
Legal drinking age is 18years old (bring proper I.D.)
You must be 18 to enter the casino as well.
Entry Requirements
The ideal proof of citizenship is a U.S. passport. If
you do not have one, you can use a birth certificate,
as long as it has a raised seal. In addition to a
birth certificate, be sure to bring some photo I.D.,
such as a drivers license. Certified copies of your
birth certificate can be acquired from your local
Department of Health for a nominal fee.
Money Matters
Montreal excepts the Canadian dollar as their legal
tender. The approximate exchange rate is US$1 =
CA$1.52...that means for every $100 US you get $152
Canadian...UNBELIEVABLE! Currency can be acquired from
the numerous banks and money exchange centers through
out the city. It is advisable not to exchange in your
hotel(sine the exchange rate is substantially less or
spend U.S. dollars, since most merchants will attempt
to give you an even exchange US$1 = CA$1. Credit cards
are the best way to attain the best exchange rate when
short of Canadian Dollars.
Public Transportation
Montreal is a ultra modern city that boasts one of the
best public transportation systems around. However,
due to the strength of the US dollar taxis are the
best way to get around. Their cheap!
Shopping
Most shops and boutiques are usually opened from
9:00am to 9:00pm. Most stores are opened Sundays.
There are two taxes applicable on most things you buy:
the GST(TPS in French) which is federal sales tax at
7% and the PST(TVQ in French) which is the provincial
sales tax at 6.5%. Most prices advertised don't
include either tax. Visitors from outside Canada you
can have the GST refunded on certain items with a
minimum purchase of $50. This refund does not apply to
food and restaurants. TVQ is only refuded for
purchases over $100. You can get both taxes refunded
with one form at the same time.
There is a FREE shopping Montreal Shopping Guide(it
has a yellow cover) which is great. It has a huge
selection of stores for everything you may be looking
for.
There is no other place in North America where there's
a larger selection of CDs from FRENCH music, EUROPEAN,
CANADIAN, WORLD MUSIC and AMERICAN. The weak Canadian
dollar make CDs in Montreal are the cheapest
around...even cheaper than the NET! HMV/SAMs/TABOO/HIBISCUS/MUSIC
WORLD.
