THE SEA,
autumn mildness, island bathed in light, fine rain spreading a diaphanous veil over the immortal nakedness of Greece.
Happy is the man, I thought, who, before dying, has the good fortune to sail the
Aegean Sea.
Many are the joys of this world-women,
fruit, ideas. But to cleave that sea in the gentle autumnal season, murmuring the
name of each islet, is to my mind the joy most apt to transport the heart of man
into paradise. Nowhere else can one pass so easily and serenely from reality to
dream. The frontiers dwindle, and from the masts of the most ancient ships spring
branches and fruits. It is as if here in Greece necessity is the mother of
miracles.

Mainland
Greece is the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula and
the south eastern frontier of the European continent.
Somewhat larger than Louisiana, it is 51,182 square
miles of strikingly beautiful landscape. Greece is divided
into two distinct main lands - one consisting of Thessaly,
Epirus, Macedonia and the Western Thrace, and the southern
most area, a leaf shaped sub peninsula, called the Peloponnese.
Variety
is, in fact, the hallmark of the Greek landscape. There
are high mountains and entire ranges such as the Pindos
range and Mount Olympus with its summit, the Pantheon,
being the highest peak in Greece with an altitude of
9,750 feet. Off Cape Tainaron, the southern tip of the
Peloponnese, the so-called Oinoussai Pit is 15,900 feet
deep, and is the deepest point in the Mediterranean.
The
endless coastline produces a series of scenic phenomenons.
These magnificent shores give Greece incredible beauty,
quite unique to the Mediterranean.
Greece
has long served as a bridge between Europe and Asia,
and its strategic location allow for convenient vacation
planning with frequent direct flights around the world,
connecting flights to many of Europe's capitals, and
cruising to ports of call in Egypt, Israel, Turkey and
Italy.
